If Astro’s Playroom is the appetizer, then Astro Bot is the main meal that gamers deserve. Astro Bot feels like Team Asobi’s most significant moment in the spotlight. The video game studio entered the scene with the PlayStation VR tech demo, The PlayRoom, and quickly made an unforgettable impression. Their mascot character, Astro Bot, turned out to be such a big hit that they developed an entire game just for him on the PSVR.

You will encounter your first Rescued Bot on Sky Garden, near the very start of the level. There is one Puzzle Piece that floats in space in the Gorilla Nebula once you’ve beaten all levels through Apes On The Loose. The second puzzle piece can’t be reached until after you break the first blue hourglass, drain it of liquid, and then pop the cork. From that platform, turn left and kill the green blob sitting under the platform. Use it in conjunction with your rocket ability to reach the top of the platform where you fought the slime. Proceed through the level from bot #1, taking the spiral platform, defeating the snake, and continuing your climb.

In every level, there are a number of bots to rescue and puzzle pieces to find. Puzzle pieces help reveal new features in your base at the crash site, like costumes. Saving bots brings them to your base, but having more bots also lets you solve puzzles around the crash site. But what’s really interesting is that roughly 160 of the game’s 300 bots are themed on past PlayStation games, wearing adorable little costumes. At your base, you can also use coins in a vending machine to unlock items for these themed bots, giving them little motifs that you can interact with.

Obviously it depends on how much exploring you do and how much you’re bothered about collecting everything — it’s a very meaty 3D platformer in my opinion and a really nice length. Astro Bot is a showcase of a developer working at the top of its game, but most importantly a developer that keeps fun and playfulness at the forefront of everything it does. Finally though I want to highlight the fantastic score, because like its levels, it bounces around genres, delivering consistently catchy head bobbers, on top of slightly remixed versions of iconic Sony soundtracks. I know this OST is going to be in my regular rotation once it finally drops on Spotify, because it’s simply too good to leave locked within this game.

As I journeyed through Astro Bot’s gorgeous worlds, I was constantly blown away by the clever new hook each level introduced. While a traditional 3D platformer collect-a-thon at its core, Astro Bot is always throwing in a new gimmick to make each level feel fresh and distinct from all the others. Oftentimes, these gimmicks add a new exploration tool, in turn giving the developers the freedom to build levels in completely different ways. The sheer variety Astro Bot delivers is breathtaking, and like I said, there’s not a bad level in the bunch. Ever since it was first formed within Sony’s now-defunct Japan Studio, Team Asobi has put out one high quality game after another.

Some platformers are really safe in their level design/movesets so you bet I’m critical. After the player defeats the boss of each galaxy, the Bot they unlock is a classic PlayStation character. This Bot will then open up a new world based on their respective game. Everything from Kratos’ critically-acclaimed soft reboot is used in its Astro Bot level, like the environment or Bear McCreary’s score. These convey the God of War experience, but there’s an added twist.

It’s a shame that most other PS5 games don’t even come close to utilizing these features to their full potential. The new game, simply called Astro Bot and developed (like the others) by Team Asobi, kicks off when a group of robots’ PS5 mothership is attacked, scattering the robots throughout the galaxy. Your job as Astro is to go around to all the planets and collect your friends. The games have lots of fun platforming to execute, with grappling hooks and hover-jumps and all kinds of fun things. There are also plenty of alien and robotic enemies and bosses to take on. But that’s not the only way Astro Bot celebrates history, as that idea is also directly tied to the game’s collectibles.

It’s ceaselessly cute and clever, and feels more like a little kid delighted to show you their toy collection than a braggart displaying their trophies. The only ability that doesn’t work as cleanly as others is the one used in an underwater level. Meant to mimic a dolphin-like dive ability, the controls used for this one never feel as intuitive as those for other abilities. In this level, I found it unusually tricky, albeit not exactly difficult, to collect all the secrets. A few of them demanded a deft diving ability the backpack is meant to offer, but it doesn’t have the same accuracy of other abilities in the game, which led me to whiff on some sections in a way that was unique to this level. It was manageable, but if any secret levels–which tend to be some of the game’s hardest–also use this mechanic, I expect them to become some of the game’s few frustrations.

At one time, this was a fundamental video game experience; a 3D platformer was just about the coolest game you could have. These were tightly designed adventures that understood the ways that digital play could activate creativity, even through a silly little cartoon with nothing to say.

In one, you hit switches that change the level between night and day, changing the entire layout at the same time. In another, you shrink into a tiny mouse, seeing things from a whole new perspective and opening up wild new solutions to puzzles. Not only this, but the game even makes use of the controller’s speakers to make the game even more immersive. The fact is that the game is both easy to learn and play, yet it’s able to be entertaining with the sheer amount of things to collect and discover. While exploring a certain level in the first world, I came across a portal of sorts that actually led me to unlock a few of the game’s secret levels. This made me wonder just how many levels there actually are in the game. The amount of collectibles and secrets there are to discover is also staggering; it’s enough to keep you playing for hours on end and keeps achievement hunters busy.
