Astro’s Playroom Review: Ps5 Welcome Wagon

Nearby the Horizon easter egg is an island with a bot making a blocky T. This references 2020’s Dreams on PS4, developed by Media Molecule. The game is about making assets and even entire games from scratch. On the right-hand side at the start of GPU Jungle is a lower platform of a Bot dancing in an orange head with blue jorts.

In 2016, Siren was ported to the PlayStation 4 with added Trophy support. During the side-path to the PSone LCD Monitor, you’ll find a Bot in samurai attire next to a tree. This refers to Jin Sakai and the tree in his childhood home, as seen in 2020’s Ghost of Tsushima on PS4, developed by Sucker Punch. Ghost of Tsushima was the last first-party PlayStation game developed exclusively for the PS4, after which the PS5 released. Each level of the game has at least a few checkpoints, so do not worry if Astro is accidentally killed.

PaRappa in particular is famous for being the first rhythm game ever created. They’re cut-outs because all the characters were 2D in their games. After the melting snow platform section down the river, on the right side you can see two Bots by a door with a Bot further on in a lab coat. This refers to 1996’s Resident Evil on the PS1, developed by Capcom. The two characters are Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine, while the lab coat Bot is series villain Albert Wesker.

Land on the next switch to the left to lower some more platforms above. Jump up the platforms to the top, but keep an eye out on the top-left to spot Puzzle Piece #2. The platform design is rarely all that inspired though and we’re still very disappointed that all the enemies are direct rip-offs of Mario enemies, even relatively obscure ones like Pokey and Wiggler.

It also had space for a hard drive, which was required for some games, while others could use them for optional DLC or game installation to reduce load times, much like the PS3 would do. The last official servers, for Final Fantasy XI, were shut down on March 31st 2016. The PS One LCD monitor was an attachment that allowed the console to be played without using a full-sized television. It plugged into the back of the unit and used the RGB video signal, providing a much clearer picture than the Composite and S-Video signals most players used.

This is a game many people might look past in their excitement to play one of the AAA launch titles for the PlayStation 5, but that would be a mistake. Astro’s Playroom is utterly charming, surprisingly deep and shows, more than many other titles, some of what makes the PS5 unique. Better graphics and faster load times are fine, but the subtle effects that are imparted via the controller are something new — and something wonderful. And Astro shows that while Sony might excel at realistic and sometimes dark games, it’s also very capable of making a title that young kids can enjoy. While it might not be as deep and rich a world as Super Mario Bros., Astro’s Playroom is a title that young and old can both enjoy. The Playroom is a casual video game that is a collection of augmented reality mini-games.

Combined with the hardware it’s bundled on, it’s something very special indeed – and one of the best launch titles I can remember in an age. It’s a phenomenal thing, taken even further with adaptive triggers that provide meaningful, forceful feedback. It deserves a place among the greats though – Astro’s Playroom has the coherence, character and abundance of ideas, executed with real clarity, of the very best platformers.
